I blogged about a similar solution in 2011.

You can easily modify the row template form to display different tables with different number of columns. Either create multiple tables and a "ColumnCount" field and let that field drive hide-when to display just the correct table, or use five different row template forms.

I will hopefully get around to fix the download link soon...
